Asthma is the most common lung disease in children. Childhood asthma is a long-term condition that causes inflammation and swelling of the airway walls and excessive mucus production. It also tightens the muscles around the airways. When these things happen, our airways narrow (known as bronchoconstriction), making it more difficult for us to breathe in and out of our lungs.
Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing.
Triggers of asthma include viral infections, smoke, perfume, pollen, mold, and dust mites.
